Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake reiterated that the Private Medical College in Malabe would not be closed down and that more such Private Colleges would be set up in the future.

The Minister speaking during the Parliamentary adjournment debate on the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine [SAITM] stated that he would not close down the College even if the Sri Lanka Medical Council did not grant its approval, and that there were legal provisions to continue with the College.

He urged the Opposition to support him in this endeavour stating further that there were several foreign universities waiting to setup more private medical colleges in Sri Lanka.

However, the Minister also admitted that there were some shortcomings pertaining to this medical college which had to be rectified in due course. He further reiterated that this College would be consistently monitored.
